"We are born at a given moment, in a given place, and like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and the season of which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more." - Carl Gustav Jung

Cosmic Santa And Cosmic Boss Oppose One Another...

That's right, the two biggest planets in our solar system will be in direct opposition to each other on Monday evening, the 28th, at the halfway point of a cycle begun in May of 2000, when Jupiter (cosmic Santa) and Saturn, (cosmic Boss) met in earthy Taurus with a huge focus on finances! Now these two planets of dueling energy, Jupiter/expansion and Saturn/contraction, find themselves in the Aries/Libra polarity and this makes for interesting times.

First, a few words about what was going on at the start of this cycle when both planets were in stable Taurus. While it seems like just yesterday, it's been eleven years since the year 2000, or "Y-2-K", when the principles of optimism and conservation got a lot of attention due to the turn of the century, the premise being that technological advances had not taken into account the mayhem that could be caused if computers didn't make a smooth transition from the 1900's to years beginning in '2'.  There were many on the planet with extra food in their basements and some even started saving gold in case of a technological meltdown that would throw off delivery schedules of food to stores, money to and from banks, travel schedules and emergency back-up systems, etc., etc.! (yes, I am simplifying this because I don't have all night to write...)

So... a cycle that started out with practical concerns of money, food and the earth, has come around to the "illumination point" -  like a Full Moon, only instead of the Sun and Moon opposite each other, it's Jupiter and Saturn. Currently, the out-going planetary energy of giant Jupiter is cruising through Aries, the fiery first sign of the zodiac, highlighting new beginnings, daring exploits and "me, me, me..." Saturn, on the other hand, is steadfastly working to keep things on an even keel as he wants to remain in charge in Libra, familiar territory of relationships, harmony and sociability. By the way, Saturn is said to be "exalted" in this sign, thriving on bringing agreement to both sides of the table.

Your challenge is to find some kind of balance between being a kid and an adult, a seeker or a settler, a rolling stone or a staid old fart. Who is the boss of you? Where do you need to re-establish balance for yourself first, then in your relationships? These are the questions that need your focus right now! It's all well and good to want partnership, but if you don't know yourself well, how will you know what you truly need? This is a time for new starts, not repeating the mistakes of the past and Jupiter in Aries brings the courage; Saturn in Libra allows you to know what's yours and what's not. Pay attention...

What's going on all around us that distracts us and drives us to sometimes making the wrong decisions? The outer planets in the Cardinal signs are in a BIG kerfuffle; Uranus is in Aries and Pluto is in Capricorn and that adds to the current opposition on the world axis. We have a planet of limited resources struggling to deal with economic slow-downs, natural disasters, aggressive protests against the powers that be and a real need for strong leadership that is concerned with the rights of the individual. Doesn't it just make you mad... don't you just want to spit...?! Yeah... well, go ahead and see where complaining, sulking or over-reacting gets you. Or... you could use your right to exhale, take a time-out and get your bearings before just rushing headlong into the fray.

Thanks to Uranus and Jupiter both being in Aries, I'd say that speaks to the 'individual' principle and wanting to rush ahead... to just do something new and different, while Saturn wants to maintain the status-quo. Can the two sides listen to each other and make concessions? Possibly... but it has to start with you!

People need to act responsibly for themselves in order to make things happen in their lives... all the while considering the impact of their actions on  their families, neighbors and the rest of the world. But, if you think someone else will "do it", whatever "it" is, you're wrong! There is no more time for selfishness, day-dreaming or apathy - the seeds planted have begun to grow and we now have the opportunity to see where our efforts can make a difference. Be strong, step up to the plate and make your voice heard and your actions count as you align your intentions with positive outcomes for all!

Remember... keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground.

Illumination from Within and Ancient Knowledge at this Full Moon

We have two significant celestial events occurring this weekend and they are the Full Moon in Virgo at 2:10 pm on Saturday and the Vernal Equinox on Sunday. When the Sun (life-force) leaves Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, and moves into Aries for a new 12-month cycle, we have the start of the astrological year. This is the seed time, a time of emergence, self-expression and courage. The principle of self-expression is strong now; it is why we feel so much hope in the spring.

First, let's explore the implications and possibilities of this Full Moon. As the lunar cycle is waxing (building up) from the New to the Full Moon, energy is increasing and comes to a peak at the time of greatest illumination, when it is in direct opposition to the Sun and therefore reflecting the solar light. The Moon represents the principle of the personality with all it's instinctual, subconscious and emotional indicators, while the Sun represents the vital life force, will and power. We think of them as the inner and outer influences of the human being, but they have an affect on the body of the Earth as well and without all three celestial bodies, there would be no seasons, no growth, no tides and nothing to talk about.

The Virgo influence at this point in the lunar cycle speaks to the necessity of being discriminating in our choices. If trying too hard or doing too much is your issue, pick one thing to focus on and pay attention to the details; do it well and with integrity, whether it's a new health regime, Spring cleaning or setting up a new schedule or daily routine. On the other hand, if you can't decide what to focus on, visit the Pisces side of the same coin (Moon in Virgo/Sun in Pisces... the polarity...) and find some quiet time to reflect, listen to music or meditate on what your dream is... the one that you are now waking up to... and need to find the energy for, for yourself.

Virgo is also about setting boundaries, especially the parameters of where you end and another begins. I think Robert Frost had it right - good fences do make good neighbors. I am not talking about putting up physical walls here! I am talking about knowing limits and knowing when to extend our boundaries or not. The Piscean side of this coin is compassion and no boundaries; please ask yourself your limits before extending yourself too far. In astrology we say that the Virgo/Pisces polarity is about service and/or suffering. Having a clear understanding of your limits allows you to extend yourself in a way that works for you, without having to suffer. At the same time, being of service gives you a sense of caring for others on the same planet without ignoring their suffering. A short-hand way of remembering this is: Virgo - be of service and Pisces - be compassionate, with healthy boundaries thrown in!

There is another factor to consider today, and it is that this is also a so-called "super moon" - when the moon is the closest to the earth (perigee); and this is the closest it has been in about twenty years. The lunar pull on our tides, emotions and instincts will be very strong at this time. So, let's look at one way of understanding what affect that can have through it's current placement in the zodiac. Each degree of the 360 degrees has it's own symbolism which can shed light on our understanding and these are called the Sabian Symbols, first visualized and defined in the 1920's by Elsie Wheeer and Dane Rudhyar.

The Sabian symbol for Saturday's Full Moon at 29 degrees of Virgo is: A Seeker After Occult Knowledge Is Reading An Ancient Scroll Which Illuminates His Mind. In his book, An Astrological Mandala, Dane Rudhyar speaks of the significance of this degree as "After a crisis one should seek to realign the renewed consciousness with the primordial Revelation of the Truth of Man."  To further paraphrase Rydhyar, I find it very interesting that the symbolism for what is being illumined at this time has to do with "the essential realities of what Man represents in the Universal Order of things. At this important juncture on the Earth, we need to determine the best way to tap into this basic knowledge for a safe rebirth." What is the truth of man and why are we here on this planet at this time? These are good questions to ask yourself and to study and ponder.

Happy New Year everyone!! As the Sun enters Aries tomorrow, it is both the start of the new year astrologically and the official start of Spring. This re-birth happens every year and in the northern hemisphere it means the end of dull gray winter and the emergence of buds on the trees and shoots in the garden. Here in Vermont, Spring is epitomized by the sap running in the maple trees and the snow melting into the rushing brooks and rivers. Things that flow and connect us in ways seen and unseen is Piscean, and today is the last full day of the Sun's travels through this watery and sensitive sign of the zodiac. It reminds me of Uranus being at that point just a week ago... so much fiery energy ahead with Sol joining Mercury (communication), Jupiter (expansion) and Uranus (sudden changes).

Thoughts and energy now turn to beginnings, new starts and rushing forward as Aries gets the focus. This is the time to plant seeds and try new things! Arian natures get bored with the same old routines and can be quite forceful in their pursuit of adventure, often starting too many projects, one right after the other, and finding themselves unable to complete them all. Pick one or two things you have wanted to devote yourself to and experience the delight of beginning again. Just be careful not to alienate others as you rush forward to express your-self and remember that others have a 'self' they would also like to express.

Springtime starts out with softer noises, like birds chirping and brooks beginning to flow under the ice, then it gets louder as more and more birds return and wildlife comes out to poke around the feeders and at the brooks now rushing loudly downstream with the weight of all that melting snow... hammers and saws and drills add to the sounds of Spring repairs and so it begins again - life is renewed and hope springs eternal! The brook on the back of my property is so full and loud that I can hear it all night long rushing first to the Ottaquechee, then the Connecticut River and eventually to the sea. I like to think about my 'Burnside Cottage' being connected to my island home and all of us residing on this blue-green marble being connected in ways seen and unseen.

Here's a poem by Emily Dickenson for you~

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Remember, keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground.

Waking Up to Oneness - Uranus in Aries

Welcome to Uranus in Aries. The earthquake and tsunami in Japan this morning are just one indication of the change-over from Pisces. (water, oceans, sensitivity...) into Aries, indicative of sudden changes and new starts. The rapid motion of Arian energy combined with sudden events brings up new ways of looking at what this new and unusual energy is about.

What I mean by this is, that while we can consider this event an introduction to the uncertain and unstable energy of Uranus in Aries, we can also see how the speed (Aries) of technology (Uranus) brings the news and information to us via internet, cell phone and other modern communication devices. Like a wall of water roaring in, the information can be overwhelming. We each need to process it for ourselves even while we are keenly aware of the impact on the whole. I have something running around in my head and it's this - "one for all and all for one..."

The excitement of  new beginnings is another aspect of Uranus in the first sign of the zodiac. Wherever you have Aries in your birthchart is where you will experience  this awakening of a fresh start now being a possibility.  Take a minute to recall that sense of being on the threshold of something different, or the anticipation you felt at not knowing what is just around the corner that's been hanging over you for the last few months. Well, now you are experiencing a speeding up of insight or awareness of what it might be; not that you have the complete picture yet. It's just that we have clearly crossed into new territory and there's no more time to look back longingly. It's important to look ahead to the future and what you'd like to create.

It's also important to re-read what I wrote just yesterday about our thoughts and their power to create what comes from our minds. Stay well, replace negative thoughts with positive ones, and send loving prayers wherever they are needed. Many blessings to us all~

And...  remember to keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground!

CH... ch... ch-changes!!!

How's everyone doing? I hope you are hanging in there with all the cosmic and earthly upheaval going on all around us. The final death-throes of Uranus in Pisces, with today being the last full day before Uranus enters Aries tomorrow night, have been having various effects on planet Earth and her people.  We have the choice to exhale willingly while we let go of the old, or to fight for every single breath, not wanting to release what's familiar even if it no longer serves us.

I have been noticing various affects during this passing of the zodiacal guard... Some people have had major shake-ups in their relationships, either letting go of an old one that no longer works for them, or deciding to take things in a new direction and really put some energy into it. Others have had no say in the surprises coming their way, except for in their reaction to the change. Here's where I remind you... that I believe we are probably ready for whatever comes our way, on some level, and just need to begin dealing with the newness to see how it fits into our lives.

Uranian energy is out-of-the-box, upside down and out-of-the-blue, all at once. When you're affected by this type of surprise, it can be a feeling of sudden insight, being gob-smacked by a new realization or that life just plain isn't fair! How do you deal with something completely out of your control? First of all, don't panic! Release the fear with a good exhale, or three..., then slowly begin to breath in again, seeing if there's someplace you feel the need to explore, some area of your life that you need to go forward in.

As Uranus enters Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, with a Cardinal attitude (I'm in charge...) and a Fire disposition (just go for it...!), the tendency is to move away very quickly from whatever was holding you back. In your haste to take new strides, be careful not to open yourself up right away to alienation or aggressive behaviors from others as a direct result of everyone reacting individually to all these changes! Aries is symbolized by the Ram and in the physical body, has ruler-ship over the head. Do you really need to get hit in the head with a two-by-four to see or hear what is going on around you?! I hope not.

The Moon in Taurus today is good for practical steps, like slow and steady wins the race... It's also a good time to assess you finances and see how well you're doing with that budget or cutting back on purely frivolous expenses. I have been making it a challenge to count up my change and together with any one dollar bills, see how soon I can turn the contents of my purse into a ten or twenty dollar bill, which then goes into a 'secret' compartment until I get another twenty and they go into my checking account instead of someone else's pocket. (fill in the blank for yourself...) fancy coffee, cigarettes, that chocolate bar or a bottle of wine... whatever it is you know you don't need, but want right now.

In the wee hours after midnight tonight/tomorrow, the Moon leaves earthy Taurus and enters airy Gemini, ruled over by Mercury, the social butterfly of the zodiac. Expect lots of conversations, distractions and changes in direction over the next two days! Being in contact is good, but 'constant contact' can be exhausting... and as Mercury is the "messenger of the gods", perhaps a little quiet time spent in reflection and communing with your higher self is  the perfect way to enter into this new age of enlightenment, as Uranus heads into Aries tomorrow night. Ask yourself, what is important to me to reflect back of myself... how do I want to go forward... and what do I want to replace the old with?

Be patient on Sunday morning as the emotional Cancer Moon squares off with the newly situated Uranus in Aries... the first aspect of, and a hint at, our adjustment in this new Uranian cycle! Cancer is a cardinal water sign and Mother Earth, the tides and our emotions are all strongly affected by the Moon in its' ruler-ship. Be aware of what you say, start or do now.

And so begins this new phase of feelings about our safety and security on the planet in this new age of uncertainty... what do you want to create for yourself... do you believe you can make a difference in your own life? I leave you with this quote from a poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox~

   Words Are Like Arrows

...You never can tell what your thoughts will do,
In bringing you hate or love;
For thoughts are things, and their airy wings
Are swifter than carrier doves.
They follow the law of the universe –
Each thing must create its kind,
And they speed o’er the track to bring you back
Whatever went out from your mind.

As always, remember to keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground!

Transitions from Pisces to Aries and the Week... Month... Year... Ahead

The New Moon in Pisces on Friday had me a bit nostalgic and enjoying some down-time and while I did get  to see my hair stylist and grocery shop during the day, later I met friends  for a bite to eat at the Skunk Hollow Tavern where I got to enjoy listening and dancing to the Willie Edwards Blues Band, the best Blues in Vermont! As someone with a Pisces-ruled third house natally, music, especially the Blues, speaks to me. Check out the area of your life/house in your natal chart, that Pisces rules for some insight into what I'm talking about today.

From now until the next New Moon in Aries on April 3rd, we are under the influence of Friday's Pisces New Moon. The free-flowing energy of this watery, last sign of the zodiac, connects us with our inner world, our dreams and our intuition. Think of the Pisces people that you know... aren't they sensitive, caring, perhaps a bit unstable in the physical world, helping you adapt to your feelings and be in touch with your emotional
needs? This is the time of year, the ending of winter, for winding down and resting up... so that we can feel a sense of renewal with the coming of spring and the Sun's entry into Aries at the Vernal equinox, on March 20th, the day after the Full Moon. Once the Moon and Sun come together at the Aries New Moon, on April 3rd, we'll barely have time to catch our collective breaths!

Pisces relates to that dream-like stage just before awakening when what seemed so real on 'coming to' gives way to the harsher reality of day-break. Whether you remember your dreams or not, your subconscious has been busy sending and processing the symbols of your life and connections and is always storing what you need to know, just below the surface. Painting, music, photography and meditation are some of the ways to cross this threshold and push back the veil to be in touch with the unseen and flowing nature of your rich inner life. You are not separate from your divinity and Pisces helps you forge the links you need for wholeness of mind, body and spirit.

The reason it is so important to understand the flowing, winding-down energy of Pisces and the out-of-the-gate fiery energy of Aries is that there are several transitions happening from this mutable water sign to the cardinal fire of Aries this Spring. Jupiter, cosmic bringer of opportunities that he is, started the ball rolling in late January and is now moving so fast, like a giant snowball, about to pick up Mercury/planet of communications, Uranus/ innovations and the Sun/life-force, pulling them all along into Aries, making this season truly a year for new beginnings. If you've been waiting for something to motivate you, you won't have to wait much longer!

Social interactions, agreements and mental energy all fall under Mercury's ruler-ship and Mercury is about to leave the nostalgic waters of Pisces this Wednesday, where s/he cruised through at about two degrees a day... fast(!)... to continue streaking ahead in Aries for the rest of March, until turning retrograde on the 31st and doing an about-face... wait a minute, did I miss something...?!... and going back over this recently explored territory, staying in Aries until May 16th! Now that could be a whole lot of second-guessing,  taking back your words, re-negotiating, re-writing of contracts, etc., etc. ...more on Mercury retrograde in a couple of weeks; we'll have plenty of time to reflect on the art of  "opening mouth/inserting foot"...

After Wednesday, you have an opportunity, while the moon is waxing (building up in strength) and Mercury is in Aries, the sign of beginnings, to speak up and start something new. Whatever you've been waiting for, this will be the time to begin it! Initiate, put it out there or take the first step... what are you waiting for?! Just remember to temper your impulses with a dose of proper restraint so that you don't burn up your bridge behind you - you may need to go back over it when Mercury is retrograde in April!!

The REALLY BIG news of the week is Uranus's entry into Aries on Friday, where this unconventional planet will remain for the next seven years! Here are some keywords associated with Uranian energy: innovative, electric, revolutionary, surprising, tumultuous, inventive, eclectic and impersonal. Here are some keywords for Aries: enthusiastic, energetic, impulsive, headstrong, self-absorbed, fiery and daring. You can combine any two words from these lists and get a strong indication of the kind of energy we will see expressed when Uranus moves into Aries. The Moon on Friday is in talkative Gemini, so if you miss something, you'll still hear about it later on!! Besides, we'll be living in uncertain times (Uranus in Aries) for quite awhile, so you'll have plenty of opportunity (Jupiter in Aries) between now and June 4th to see how this affects you and how you chose to respond.

Please remember... all of the Arian and Uranian energy is fast, sudden and potentially volatile, especially when combined. So, while you may be getting the kind of boost you need to jump-start a project or new beginning for yourself, so are a lot of other people. This is when you have to recall the Piscean understanding that we are all connected and while we have the right to express ourselves as individuals, there needs to be sensitivity for our fellow wo/man.

We are in the adjusting phase of awakening to the light of a new day and we need to get up gently, aligning ourselves on all levels of mind, body and spirit. Just as the dream-world seems real, so too does this dimension we call "reality". Be gentle with yourself and others and take time out to tune into your inner life in order to maintain the equilibrium needed to go through these uncertain times. I appreciate this opportunity to share with you and want you to know how important each and every one of you is to me on this journey.

Remember... keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground!
