Sometimes, just before the New Moon, we are so eager to leave the energy of the past month behind that we jump-the-gun in our excitement to start anew... this is not a good idea in general and a really bad idea today, in particular! Please read the earlier Blog post I wrote this morning and know that being on the dark side of the Moon is the primary reason for this advice. Add to that, the fact that the Capricorn Moon is ruled by "father time" himself - Saturn, and it makes complete sense to exercise caution and restraint for the next few days. Just take care of business already begun and follow through on things - do not begin anything new or really important, especially as it involves security or business!
Monday's Capricorn Moon only makes one aspect and that's a square to Saturn. Sound familiar... Saturn... Capricorn ...? Let me remind you of their attributes: Saturnian energy is that of discipline and necessity, consolidating, delaying and restricting, while Capricorn is the zodiac sign of practicality and efficiency. When the Moon is in the sign of Capricorn, the principle of contraction is at work; it has just left the expansive realm of Sagittarius and the time for fun and games is over. Even though Capricorn is a Cardinal sign, seeking status and security, it is important to do only what you can within your means, making every effort count while you bide your time waiting for an opening to present itself.
A few words about the square aspect... think four corners, hard edges and difficult negotiations, as well as not being able to go over, through or around with any degree of ease. Squares serve a purpose in pointing out where we may need to find a way to break-through something, but butting your head against a brick wall doesn't help! Tomorrow's Moon/Saturn square makes it a just plain hard day to get people in positions of authority to help us... instead, they want to tell us the rules, set limits and say "NO!" They don't care about our feelings, when all we wanted was a bit of consideration. Don't go there... be patient and plan for Wednesdays' New Moon in Aquarius.
A Mercury/Moon alliance late Tuesday morning promotes stating the facts, being succinct and saying only what you need to say, no promises you cannot keep. The Capricorn Moon saga continues until 2:32 p.m. when it aspects Uranus and while you may be pleasantly surprised with a feeling of accomplishment or a sense that your hard work is paying off, the Moon goes VOC for the rest of the afternoon and evening before entering Aquarius and getting ready to join the Sun Wednesday night. (Remember, the void-of-course Moon is a time for introspection, spiritual work and cleaning off your desk of the old.) When the Moon enters Aquarius at 10:12 p.m. it forms a supportive aspect to optimistic Jupiter, increasing our anticipation of new starts, insights and exciting connections... while we just breathe in ... and... out... patiently awaiting the cosmic energies to work with us.
Venus joins with Neptune in the wee hours Wednesday morning and you could have very sweet dreams indeed, but comes the sunlight and Uranus makes an appearance, jolting you awake with the phone ringing or the alarm only going off in your head, making you hop up out of bed to hit the ground running! You've been anticipating this New Moon day, haven't you?! Well slow down, because technically, we're still on the dark side of the moon... oh no... you didn't want to hear that, did you? What does she mean...?! Just this, Luna comes up Sol at 9:31 p.m. and THEN we have the Aquarius New Moon!
This day is also known as Imbolc, Candlemas or Groundhog Day - it's the mid point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere; another indication that astrology is aware of and based on the seasons. Meditate for clarity with one or more people of like mind this evening, clearing your head of expectations and allowing cosmic insights to flow in. If you're not calm and your head is filled with worry, fear or trying-too-hard, you won't be ready to receive the higher vibrations that will guide you in the month ahead.
Thursday is the best day to begin things you've been wanting to do. Finally... a harmonious aspect between the Moon and Saturn! We can start to make new connections, implementing those ingenious ideas we've been bombarded with since Tuesday night -yay! Oh, and Happy Chinese New Year - the Year of the Rabbit! Rabbit energy is peaceful and in a Rabbit year we can breathe more easily if we practice negotiation while focusing on home, security and family, especially paying attention to women and children.
Venus moves into Capricorn just after midnight on Friday (EST) enhancing efforts of conservation and appreciation of what we have. Putting resources into those areas we want to see grow and become solid foundations for the year ahead is your best use of this earthy energy! The Pisces Moon also arrives Friday morning taking us through the weekend and promoting paying attention to our hunches and insights. Being attuned to the unseen vibrations can benefit your quest in group endeavors and humanitarian pursuits. make sure you take some time to unwind and enjoy a movie, art gallery or your favorite music.
As always, remember to keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground~

The Dark Side of the Moon
Here we are three days before the New Moon and the light is decreasing. That expression, the dark side of the moon has a couple of different meanings. For some it means the side of the Moon facing away from the Earth, the side we never see, the one cloaked in mystery and conspiracy theories. In astronomical discussions, it means the Moon in her cycle is going from Full to next New Moon and the light it reflects is decreasing. She is in the Balsamic phase of endings, when it is truly becoming the darkest time just before dawn. In astrology we say it's a time of preparedness for the next wave of solar and lunar energy aligning at the New Moon.
Some of us were born during a Balsamic phase and recognize this sense of not knowing what's coming and a feeling of expectation as somehow familiar. I have a sort of love/hate relationship with this time each month because I don't like being left in the dark. However, I have come to accept that this is a necessary respite in order get in touch with what I have just gained, lost or experienced from the passing cycle. It's a natural time to pull-in, meditate, reflect and prepare for the coming new cycle.
With Saturn's station and retrograde motion at the Last Quarter Moon five days ago, we had to deal with time slowing way down to a standstill while we may have felt we were slipping backwards. It wasn't easy to put our plans in motion and now we are being tested for endurance, patience and perserverance. Today, the Sun/life-force and Mars/energy form supportive roles in Saturn's determination to get things done. Apply your energetic direction with your resources, no matter how limited they may feel at the moment... dig deep because you have it in you... and keep your objective in mind!
Today's Moon in Capricorn, the sign Saturn has ruler-ship over naturally, likes stability and brings a strong work ethic to the fore-front. However, this determination is tested just before noon when the Moon squares off with giant Jupiter, recently into Aries territory, expanding the limitless possibilities we may want to pursue. This is a caution not to take on more than you can manage at this time. Remember, we are in the waning Moon phase and we need to focus on the most important thing we want to achieve, not all the other carrots that may be brought out and dangled in front of us.
Tonight's monthly alignment of the Moon and Pluto further enhances our need not to give in to desperate measures or feelings of defeat. Instead, re-align yourself with your own inherent abilities as you work toward taking back the power of your life's focus. Jealousy and suspicion are the emotions that can surface under this aspect... more shadowy stuff that can allow others to rob us of our sense of well-being and another reason to stay centered and focused.
The dark side of the Moon can certainly bring up insecurities and fear, especially when other conditions are also in effect. The challenge is to be true to your self and the goals you started working on to improve your life at the last New Moon in Capricorn. Review the progress you have made and vow to put in new effort after Wednesday's New Moon in Aquarius - more on that later!
Remember, keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground!

Saturn Retrograde
The biggest news of the week is with determined Saturn turning stationary retrograde earlier today in the sign of Libra. That in and of itself is important, but the other factor is that we have just ended our three-week "free pass" of all the planets being 'direct' in the cosmos! Think of the planets as energy - the "what" that is going on and the sign of the zodiac it is moving through is like a state of mind and determines "how" this planetary energy gets expressed while moving through this sign. This is appropos for everyone and becomes even more personal when you know where that territory is in your natal horoscope.
Now, as Saturn wends his way back from 17 degrees Libra and 14 minutes to 10 Libra 24 minutes, we get to re-focus and work on bringing balance and harmony back into our career and professional lives. That may sound like I just said something fairly par-for-the-course, but it's a lot more important than it sounds. The transpersonal planets, Jupiter and Saturn, and the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, all stop and re-wind in this retrograde direction for a few to several months each year;sometimes it feels like agony waiting for a situation to change or for the changes we need to come our way.
Just a reminder here... the planets don't actually stop and turn around in direction when becoming retrograde or going direct. This has to do with our perspective here on planet Earth and the different rates of speed each planet takes in it's orbit around the Sun. From where we are, at different times of the year, it appears that the planet is stopping and then backing up when this happens. The way we think of this in astrology is that we are re-covering, re-doing or re-directing that planet's energy back over territory it just moved through - it's symbolic of what needs to happen or be re-worked!
In Saturn's case, it's all about focusing on your efforts to achieve something out in the world, particularly in your professional life. What is it you have been trying to do? Is there a project you had hoped to get off the ground, or a relationship you were trying to build on, since mid October of 2010... and now find yourself stalled? This is the time, another thing under Saturn's ruler-ship, to work hard to tweak, re-do, or re-focus your determination. Then, when Saturn goes direct again on June 13th, he will move forward over this re-worked territory, leaving this area on September 14th and moving more steadily forward. Think of the next nine months as time for gestation, growth and taking care of the baby you want to have be born healthy and ready to be seen out in the world in several months! In other words, slow down and focus (that word again...) your thoughts, resources and elbow-grease on what you want to achieve.
Saturn in Libra can be exceptionally good for building strong relationships, as long as we put the time in and are realistic in our abilities, using our resources wisely and somewhat conservatively. Saturn likes to maintain the status quo, or at least, not throw out the baby with the bath water. The little progress you made is important for new construction to be added to - it's like building a house from the ground up - you want the foundation to be solid and the frame to withstand the test of time. You now have the time to make sure your relationships are strong and supportive and work for everyone involved. It wouldn't be wise to push your personal agenda during this time without engaging the support of those key people also affected.
We are at the Last Quarter Moon phase when the energy of the relationship between the Sun and the Moon is waning, not increasing. This is often a challenging time, as we have to tighten our belts and look at how things have progressed since the New Moon, which I will remind you was in Capricorn (Saturn's natural ruler-ship) back on January 4th. Ask yourself, am I happy with the way things are going... what needs more work... or what can I do to make things better? This is the time to follow through on our efforts until the next New Moon in Aquarius, on February 2nd, when innovations, new connections and group or humanitarian concerns become the focus of our solar energy. Until then...
Remember to keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground!

Hold Onto Your Hats - It's Going To Get Even Colder & More Blustery!!
Welcome to the middle of January and a week of change blowing in! Here are the major things going on in the cosmos that will be affecting us on planet Earth in the days ahead: Mars just entered Aquarius; The Sun enters Aquarius; there's a Full Moon in Cancer, and Jupiter leaves Pisces for Aries.
Alright, we'll begin with Mars - besides liking to go first, he did make a big move out of Capricorn last night, where he felt quite at home, thank you very much... into cold and electric Aquarius. Imagine this: the energetic impulse of action and aggression penetrating the disseminating and awakening energy of the intellect. Now, doesn't that just bring up all kinds of images in your minds' eye?! That's what is supposed to happen when the planet of action ingresses into the zodiacal sign of groups, communication and detached connections.
Now, due to Mars' forceful and sometimes, aggressive, nature, there's a caution to watch where you're directing all this energy so you make the connections you want, rather than being too rash and ending up getting the cold shoulder, or even a big shock! If you want to reach out and touch someone, could you do it in more of an exploratory manner, instead of forcefully, remembering that Aquarian energy is all about the intellect and logic. Think about Star Trek... appealing to Spock's reasoning always worked better than trying to browbeat him into action and while he was Mr. Aloof, he usually had the best interests of all involved at the forefront of his actions. So, use this combined energy of action and innovation for brainstorming with others and achieving those aha! moments while Mars is in Aquarius until February 22nd.
The Full Moon in Cancer on Wednesday afternoon reflects our progress this month with the things we chose to begin at the New Moon, back on the 4th, concerning business or career. Expect feelings of contentment to arise if you are happy with your efforts to date. On the other hand, you may find emotions running rampant, especially on the home front, if you haven't been seeing improvements. A nurturing thing to do is have friends or family in for a pot-luck to remind yourself how lucky you are to have the comforts of home; if you are feeling vulnerable be careful to pick people who truly care for you to be around at this time. Also, expressing caring by supporting food shelves, homeless shelters or efforts to feed children is a grand way to work with this Cancerian energy.
Early on Thursday morning, the Sun moves out of the practical earth sign of Capricorn for it's monthly foray into the fixed air element of Aquarius. While the life-giving vitality of the Sun is strongest in its' own sign of Leo, it is weaker in its' polar opposite sign, Aquarius. Here, the urge to create is expressed through the mind, rather than the warmth of enduring fire and so, we get the coolness of the intellect and the detachment of personal concern being expressed for the good of the group. Don't get me wrong, Aquarians are very caring and great humanitarians who can put personal needs aside and act in the best interests of the whole community.
You may be thinking of some people you know born under this fixed Air sign who are very independent or even rebellious and wonder at their concern. There seems to be two kinds of Aquarians, those who value the rights of the individual to express themselves in any purple-haired way they want... or the emotionally detached committee leader who cares about the individual rights of whomever their organization is working for. Both types are necessary to understanding, enlightenment and innovative ways of dealing with old problems. Without new ways of connecting and looking at things, progress would definitely stall before the meeting was called to order! At any rate, we all have Aquarian energy somewhere in our birthcharts, which means we all get to experiment with our individual talents and gifts for uniqueness when the Sun traverses this area of our horoscope.
Oh, that reminds me of one of my all-time favorite jokes... please pardon my aside here...!
Q: "How do you catch a unique rabbit....?"
A: "You 'neak up on him!!" OK, I know some of you probably don't appreciate my sense of humor, however, it's a prelude to the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit... and that's a blog for next month!
Ah yes, back to this coming week... talk about endings - giant Jupiter is leaving watery Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, and entering fiery Aries on Saturday, the 22nd. You may think, 'finally, less issues with water and instability...' While I have to say there is some merit to that reasoning, when Jupiter's expansiveness is focused on the fire of new creations in the take-charge fashion of Aries, you may long for the sensitivity just experienced in Pisces... especially if egos become unbearably huge and forceful as they try to impress their agenda onto the rest of us. Take the boldness you need to begin new projects while jovial Jupiter fills his bag with new toys until June 4th, but remember, play nice and follow through so you can finish one or two of the projects you start this winter! After all, Saturn is in the opposite sign of Libra and we ought to be learning how to compromise as we bring some balance into our lives through our relationships.
Remember, keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground!

Confusion & Ignorance About Different Astrology Systems and the Constellations
Every few years, "news" of some sort, about Ophiuchus, as the "new" sign of the zodiac, is trotted out to shake things up... and it does... briefly! I think the last time was four years ago, but with an increase in social networking, the scary "news" spreads like wildfire. Fortunately, it has nothing to do with how most western astrologers practice their skill.
Astrologers have been familiar with the precession of the equinoxes for thousands of years. Precession is an astronomical phenomenon that divides modern astrology into two systems - sidereal and tropical. For the most part, Western astrologers practice "tropical" astrology using the twelve-fold division of the Ecliptic, or Sun's path around the Earth, where the Zodiac signs are based on the seasons. Indian, or Vedic astrologers, use the sidereal zodiac, in which the signs refer to the specific constellations. I have not studied Vedic astrology enough to speak intelligently about it, so I will not address how it works.
None of this is "news" to astrologers... it's just another pathetic attempt to debunk astrology, a system most astronomers and scientists haven't studied and therefore, don't know anything about. Scientists and reporters who go on promoting such stories without asking astrologers what we know or how we deal with this information are not doing their homework and are practicing poor journalism and even worse science!
Remember, while keeping your head in the stars and your feet on the ground, trust the people you know to be giving you information you can rely on!
While Ophiuchus IS a constellation, like a lot of others... it ISN'T a zodiac sign! Besides, it doesn't fall into the zodiac belt ( the 23.5 degree band of the ecliptic or sun's path around the earth) and it isn't counted as one of the twelve signs used in Western astrology! So, all you wanta' be Ophicuihians will just have to embrace your real sun sign and find out where the rest of your personal planets fall in the zodiac!
A few words about fixed stars... there are billions of them... and they comprise the backdrop of the heavens, making up the constellations through which the planets move. While fixed stars, and therefore the constellations, do move slightly, all astrology systems and computer programs in existence take this into account.

Adjusting & Filtering Thoughts and Energy
For now, this Blog is serving two purposes - as a place to share my thoughts on astrological topics and a weekly forecast of the current celestial weather. Soon I will be letting you know that my website is up, and from there you will be able to access both a Weekly Forecast and my Blog, as well as other topics for your enjoyment and use.
Looking at this second week of the new year and the increase of soli-lunar energies, (the build-up from New to Full Moon), we find Sunday's Moon in easy-going and compassionate Pisces harmonizing with the Sun in practical, earthy Capricorn. Pisces is just right for movies, classical music or art and/or baking, so pick your favorite way to spend the evening and enjoy yourself!
Mercury takes center stage this week as the planet of communication, movement and planning interacts with Uranus and Jupiter before it leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn on Thursday. We do need to take time to pause and consider our thoughts before speaking, as words have a way of pouring freely out of our mouths in Sagittarius. A better use of our energy would be to take our ideas and decide how to make them work for us in the future.
We start off the work-week on Monday under a void-of-course moon until it enters fiery and active Aries at 10:24am. Resolve to start new projects after this time, while aligning what you hope to achieve with career or business energy in a positive, forward-looking direction. Mercury in truth-seeking Sagittarius and Uranus in sensitive Pisces on Monday evening could bring ingenious ideas that you will want to write down. Also under this influence, you'll want to practice strong filtering so you don't blurt out the one thing that could end a friendship.
Over-indulgence in sharing every thought or trying to act on every new idea is a no-no Tuesday as Mercury squares off with expansive Jupiter; instead, think about how you can affect change for yourself in one area of your life and take a step in that direction. Adding to the need for restraint on Tuesday night, is the Aries Moon pushing against serious Saturn, putting the focus clearly on using your best innovative ideas for the greater good and cautioning you not to get caught up in self-importance. Hard work pays off in the long run!
The First Quarter Moon early on Wednesday may bring up doubt or frustration about where you're headed. This is a good time to tweak your plans if you feel the need, or to push through and keep on keeping on - in other words, don't get discouraged by the hard work this new phase is taking as the Moon enters practical Taurus tonight.
Thursday and Friday find a glut of earth energy as Mercury moves into Capricorn and the Taurus Moon combines with Pluto in this cardinal earth sign. Also, with Mars still in this practical sign, where it thrives on building... ideas, foundations and/or actual structures, get out the graph paper or notebook and make a few notes for actual steps to take going forward. Be pragmatic, work hard and take action to reach your goals over these two days. It will feel easier going with the flow on Friday.
Expect to be busy Saturday, interacting with co-workers, neighbors or siblings under a Gemini Moon. Everyone wants to talk... go... or do... as energy-driven Mars gets in on the act later in the day when he moves into community-oriented Aquarius. Joint projects benefit from sharing innovative ideas this evening. Mars remains in this cool and airy sign until February 23rd, bringing level heads to the conference table, so long as personal egos take a back seat for the next month and a half and we remember we do not have to act on every idea we have!
As always, remember to keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground.

Get Ready... Get Set... to Put Your Plans in Motion Beginning January 4, 2011
Happy New Year Everyone! I hope the transition overnight from 2010 to 2011 found you looking forward optimistically to all the excitement coming our way this year!
Sagittarius Moon is in charge for the first two days of 2011 and therefore responsible for leading the way on this new adventure, an apt guide as we forge ahead. The moon changes sign every two and a half days, passing through all twelve signs of the zodiac in one month and it fell to Sagittarius to lead this auspicious entry! The unknown territory of the higher mind, long-range plans, spiritual beliefs and philosophical musings all fall under the Archer's bow as we look to discover how we're all connected on this blue-green marble floating in space.
On Monday, the moon enters Capricorn, a Cardinal Earth sign, putting the focus squarely on business and career concerns. While it is the first work day of the new year, I am going to ask you to do something that may, or may not, be difficult and that is to refrain from starting anything new - projects, contracts or associations... for just one more day! If you already took a new job and have to start work Monday that's a different matter, just realize you will be hitting the ground running Tuesday!
As the Moon makes it's monthly conjunction with powerful Pluto mid-day on Monday, you may come face-to-face with "the boss" and your responsibilities - if you are the boss, review your goals and what you need to do to implement them in the days, weeks and months ahead. Look around to see what needs organizing while you clean off your desk or work bench, empty that old file of things you need to finish and make space and time to start anew on Tuesday with the New Moon Solar Eclipse energy.
Here it is at last, Tuesday and the green light we've been waiting for to get moving again in some new directions! We have the monthly New Moon which is also a Solar Eclipse in Capricorn, a very hard-working and practical sign. There are so many reasons to apply ourselves NOW in those areas concerning business, career and what we hope to achieve: Mercury is once again direct, allowing the ideas and thoughts of the last month free-range to go out and bring us back what we're trying to get, and all the planets are currently moving in direct motion, which doesn't happen often.
Eclipse energy has a way of propelling things forward rapidly, if we're ready for it. It's like a jump-start where we get a boost of energy that was lacking and now we have the power to get going, making big strides that have long-lasting effects. Where is Capricorn in your natal chart? Do you have planets at 13 degrees of Capricorn or any of the Cardinal signs... because if you do and you've been planning wisely and working hard, you will really notice the affects of this moon phase. Oh, you'll still have to apply the elbow-grease, but the combined solar and lunar energies will act as a powerful fertilizer for the seeds you plant at this time and what you hope to achieve in the next six months.
Did you aim those arrows true last month? You'll find out soon enough if they hit the mark as you begin to build new dreams, new structures, new networks for your goals this year. This is definitely NOT the time to just sit back and wait for anything to happen... it IS the time to roll up your sleeves and do whatever it takes to inch forward in your quest to achieve your goals!
An Aquarius Moon arrives Wednesday morning bringing innovation and clear-headed thinking to the next few days. This moon interacts harmoniously with optimistic Jupiter and value-oriented Venus, bringing added benefit to connecting with like-minded individuals and groups in opening up new possibilities when joining forces toward a common goal. Thursday evening is an opportunity to share resources and ideas through brain-storming and for seeing tangible results by creating a workable plan with others. As the moon wends its' way through sensitive and dreamy Pisces on Friday and Saturday, compassion and creative vibes flow in, making this a great time to pick up that paint brush or camera. Other good weekend activities under this nostalgic, mutable and watery moon include going to the movies, scrap-booking, or a visit to an art show or museum and/or a musical concert.
As always, remember to keep your head in the stars and your feet on the ground.
